The towel under the blue glass was dry, but a faint red ring spread on the wood beside it. Nora pressed two fingertips against the damp edge; the fibres clung with a gentle squelch before releasing. She tried to keep the kitchen table organised so she could draw neat lines in her notebook each time the coloured water climbed higher. The three tall glasses stood cool and smooth, their outsides beaded with moisture. When she nudged the red one, it slid a fraction; a new crescent of pink appeared. The celery stalk in that glass felt rigid and ridged, yet the cut end looked uneven, as if yesterday’s slice had crushed one channel. A small rubber narwhal that held pages flat bobbed against the notebook when the table shifted, reminding her that the first measurement was already late.

Nora wiped her fingers on a spare towel and leaned closer. Through the magnifying glass she saw a trapped air bubble blocking one side of the stalk; the other side was already striped with an almost magnolia tint where red and natural green mixed. If she had kept staring at the dripping glass, the uneven stripes would have gone unnoticed. The discovery shifted her plan: instead of timing the overall climb, she now wanted to map how separate channels absorb dye at different speeds. She marked a dozen short ticks along the stalk with her pencil, each showing a point where colour paused. The blue and yellow glasses waited, their celery still pale, yet their water lines had dropped the same small amount. Warm sunlight touched the middle glass, while cool shadow clung to the one nearest the sink.

She shortened a spare stalk at the prep board; the fresh diagonal felt slick and firm. Sliding the new piece into the red glass, she watched colour race upward faster than before. The original ring on the table no longer worried her; it now served as the starting timestamp in her notes. A pale pink circle remained on the wooden grain beside the blue glass. Nora slid the damp towel over the mark.

她在備料板把另一枝芹菜截短，新切面的觸感濕滑而緊實。把新段滑入紅杯，她看見色水比先前更快往上奔。桌上的最初水痕不再困擾她；它成了筆記中的起始時間標記。藍杯旁的木紋上，依舊留著一圈淡粉色印記。諾拉把濕毛巾滑過那個痕跡。
