Two marbles, a strip of blue tape, and a slender wooden wedge tumbled onto the carpet. Quinn had tipped the supply pile while reaching for a fresh tube. Morning light slid across the launch shelf, and the nearby lamp breathed extra heat into each coloured joint. The softened tape at the straight-tube section loosened; a faint sigh drifted through the open seam. When Lena released a test marble, its whistle faded midway and the glass bead lingered like a commuter inside a waiting room. Quinn tried to traverse the sagging span by sliding the wedge under a wooden block. The whole joint dipped again, and the marble halted beneath the bookshelf’s umbra.

A recorded violinist drew a slow arpeggio from the speaker, the notes mixing with the rattle of loose marbles inside their tin. Quinn crossed the carpet toward the supply pile, careful not to jostle the fragile maze. A shorter tube had been taped in place earlier; he now searched for one with smoother walls. An adult at the table snipped the new piece, scissors chiming once before quiet returned. Quinn then angled the desk lamp away, hoping to cool the loosened joint. The bulb gave a brief buzz, and shadows folded deeper across the carpet. Next, he stacked two paperback books under the block-support zone, listening for any movement from the distant tubes. Each fresh tweak sent a cluster of soft echoes drifting along the run. Yet no marble rolled, and the stalled bead still whispered somewhere inside the shadowed section.

He crossed back with the cut tube, and a tremor in the carpet shook the forgotten wedge loose. It slid toward his ankle, nudging him just as Lena prepared another release. Without pausing, Quinn eased the wedge under the wooden block at a shallower angle than before. If he had angled the wedge like that earlier, the marble would never have stopped. Lena let the glass bead go; the revived click grew into a roar through the straight section. The sound then softened as speed bled away on the next bend. Each passing marble sent tiny shivers along the long plastic tube toward the turn. Under the block, the wedge quivered every time a marble murmured past toward the bowl.

他帶著剪好的長管走回來，地毯的一次微震把先前遺忘的楔子震了出來。楔子滑到他腳踝旁，正好在莉娜準備再次放球時碰了他一下。奎恩毫不停頓，把楔子以較平的角度塞到木塊下。要是他先前能這樣放，彈珠根本不會停下。莉娜放手，復甦的喀答聲在直線段裡變成轟隆，接著在下一個彎道前漸弱。每顆彈珠穿行長塑膠管時都帶來細微震動，而木塊下的楔子隨之顫動，震波朝碗口奔去。
