English 원문
Rain-dark streaks had already run down the mossy trunk when Miles pressed his palm against it. Dappled glare from the canopy gap lit his wet sleeve, while shadows pooled beside the upturned root plate. He aimed to cross before the mud grew deeper, yet the log’s slick top pushed every probing shoe sideways. Bea, standing on the trail approach side, watched droplets sparkle along a hanging twig. A brief lull in the drizzle let them hear distant leaves hiss, and Miles chose not to dawdle. The sharp, green scent made him reminisce about model boats he had carved from sticks last spring, but the widening puddles pulled him back to the task. He dragged a flat rock from the water’s edge, hauled it under the brighter shaft, and set it against the trunk as a first step. The rock wobbled, tilted toward brown water; loose grit slid off and scattered across the gleaming bark, offering no grip.
Bea unhooked Miles’s metal flask, still filled with steaming tea, and placed it on the log where light struck hottest. The silver surface glared so strongly that Miles had to squint. Warmth bled through the moss; moisture condensed, then seeped downward. The damp layer loosened, and an uneven patch sloughed off, revealing rough bark whose ridges caught the light like saw teeth. Heat had triggered water, and water had changed the surface. Beneath the root plate, a brood of beetles shifted as the new dampness reached the soil, their tiny shells flickering before they vanished into deeper penumbra. Miles wiped his fogged glasses, tested the exposed bark, and found his boot stayed in place. He lifted the flask, halting further softening, and strode across while Bea balanced on the steadier path he created. Far beyond, at the same hour, thin sunbeams flickered over a second fallen tree where Zane’s footsteps drummed along another freshly revealed strip of bark, carrying splashes of light deeper into the forest.
