Heat had triggered water, and water had changed the surface. Beneath the root plate, a brood of beetles shifted as the new dampness reached the soil, their tiny shells flickering before they vanished into deeper penumbra. Miles wiped his fogged glasses, tested the exposed bark, and found his boot stayed in place. He lifted the flask, halting further softening, and strode across while Bea balanced on the steadier path he created. Far beyond, at the same hour, thin sunbeams flickered over a second fallen tree where Zane’s footsteps drummed along another freshly revealed strip of bark, carrying splashes of light deeper into the forest.
