“Why is only one strip of bark still frost-white?” Esme ran a fingertip along the pale band that crossed the mossy trunk. Blue-grey puddles shivered around her boots, and silver rain threaded the air. Jasper eased closer, the genuine leather strap of his small pack sliding on his shoulder. The fallen tree blocked the trail like a low wall; beyond it, their father waited on a flat rock, turning a hood against the drizzle. Both children wanted to reach that drier clearing, yet the log offered just one firm landing — a stone the size of a plate pressed against its near side. Rain darkened the moss by the second, and the quota of trustworthy footholds kept shrinking.

Esme placed her heel on the stone, but the slick surface spun her slightly, and she stepped back. Jasper lifted a broken branch from the debris zone and tapped the trunk in systematic intervals; each hollow thud warned him that part of the wood would crumble under weight. He wedged the branch upright as a brace, leaving space for Esme’s smaller frame. She nodded, then slid her notebook into her jacket to free both hands. Their first joint push raised them only to knee height; water trickled off the curve of the bark, erasing every tiny advancement they had made by washing mud over the foothold. Esme’s sleeves grew darker; Jasper’s knees smeared with green.

A stray gust rattled the root plate and dislodged a fist-sized clump of soil. It landed beside the trunk, revealing a narrow strip of compact earth that looked identical to the surrounding mud yet held firm under Jasper’s testing boot. Esme shifted onto the new platform; Jasper passed the branch across like a balancing pole, and together they stepped over the log, boots meeting the far side ferns with a soft hiss. Behind them, water continued to collect in the hollow they had avoided.

At the same moment, beneath the upturned roots, a hedgehog nosed through a silvery worm trail, untouched by the commotion above.
