English 원문
Tap-tap echoed from the jar’s glass lip, light as rain on a lantern pane. A glossy beetle paced the rim, antennae exploring the warm air that drifted from the window. Bea brought the misting bottle close, yet her first squeeze burst a heavy plume that plunged straight onto the moss. Condensation swept across the walls, turning the view milky while the startled beetle slipped inside and vanished behind soil ridges. She set the bottle down, brow furrowing at the sudden fog hiding every neat layer she had built.
On the tray, patches of moss had been trimmed into neat, velvet squares and arranged beside the pebble dish. She pinched one square with tweezers and eased it through the jar’s mouth, but the landing soil sagged, forming a shallow sinkhole. A small fern frond tilted toward the glass, trapping a bead of moisture between its curled tip and the wall. Bea steadied the frond, then chose a flat caramel-colored pebble whose straight edge resembled a miniature quay beside a river. Sliding the pebble across the soil’s edge, she built a tiny shoreline that propped the fern away from the fogged surface. Outside, an adult adjusted the blinds, and amber light mellowed, rippling across the desk and brightening the magnifying spot. Bea leaned the glass over that patch of light, lifting the lens to inspect star-shaped leaves glistening like tiny brass gears.
While Bea slid the tray aside, its corner nudged the forgotten bottle, and it rolled softly against her wrist. She caught it, pressed the trigger with care, and released only a fine drizzle that kissed the moss without fogging the glass. Clear walls revealed the beetle stepping from beneath the new patch, its shell marked by the same ochre dust. The matching dust showed it had travelled inside the moss rather than flown from the open window. Bea laid a shred of dried leaf on the pebble quay to lure the little traveler onto safer ground. A mellow earthy smell lingered, and Bea turned the jar toward the window, offering the beetle a sunlit view.
