She pinched one square with tweezers and eased it through the jar’s mouth, but the landing soil sagged, forming a shallow sinkhole. A small fern frond tilted toward the glass, trapping a bead of moisture between its curled tip and the wall. Bea steadied the frond, then chose a flat caramel-colored pebble whose straight edge resembled a miniature quay beside a river. Sliding the pebble across the soil’s edge, she built a tiny shoreline that propped the fern away from the fogged surface. Outside, an adult adjusted the blinds, and amber light mellowed, rippling across the desk and brightening the magnifying spot. While Bea slid the tray aside, its corner nudged the forgotten bottle, and it rolled softly against her wrist.
