Pebble Against the Fern-

English 원문
Cool, grainy soil pressed against Cole’s thumb as he pinched a square of moss with long tweezers and guided it toward the wide-mouthed jar. The material tray beside him looked like a painter’s palette: bright moss pads, tiny fern fronds, and a single smooth pebble waiting on a folded paper towel. A canvas tote slumped near the desk edge, its base dotted with escaped bits of charcoal. Every surface showed a meticulous approach; each gravel layer had been rinsed and patted dry before he started. Cole lowered the moss, let it touch the damp soil, and breathed out. A short hiss from the misting bottle followed, the droplets pattering over glass and leaf.
The gentle spray also chilled the soil, and a pale earthworm, disturbed by the new coolness, twisted upward. Its slick body pushed loose grains aside, creating a narrow ridge that nudged the waiting pebble. The stone tipped, rolled down the fresh slope, and bumped the stem of a fern. The frond bowed, its tip brushing a second moss patch; that patch slipped and rested across another in a soft tangle, shading the lower growth. Cole blinked, registering the small cascade rather than any single mistake. Responsibility, in that moment, lived in the shifting layers more than in his hands.
With steady breath, he lifted a thin strip of bark from the tray. Careful consideration showed in the slow, two-finger grip he used while sliding the strip between pebble and frond. The bark caught the stone, halting its travel, and propped the fern back to a gentle curve. Commitment to balance, not perfection, now shaped the scene. He misted once more, tilting the jar so the bark stayed firm, and watched moisture collect along the new barrier. Inside the jar, a faint drip kept tapping against the glass.
