Noel stepped beside her, boots sinking into the muddy trail approach side, yet the span still missed the far edge by a child’s shoe length.

Raindrops thickened, turning the bark into a dim mirror. Pia tested two fallen branches from the debris zone; each reached farther but bent under pressure, and nothing could persuade Noel to trust them alone. She wedged the sturdier branch beneath the plank like a prop, gaining another hand-span. If the plank slipped, both of them would end up ankle-deep in brown water, so she searched once more. A flat stone near the puddle caught the same beam that had earlier lit the board; she had already noticed its glare but ignored it. Now she rolled the stone onto the trunk, nudged the plank forward, and the combined length finally bridged the glossy surface. The moment both ends touched solid bark, the whole makeshift walkway held firm at once. Pia shuffled across, balanced like a tightrope walker, then reached back and guided Noel over the bright strip. Pia wedged the board flat against the slick trunk, while a squirrel on the root wall shook rainwater from its tail.
