Vera knelt on the warm windowsill, the wood smooth under her knees, while the adult nearby worked quietly at the prop table — a narrow surface that usually served as the family breakfast nook. The sheet had been stretched tight earlier, its weave cool and slightly rough where her fingers brushed it, yet a new pinch in the cloth created a thin ridge that bent the shadows. Vera placed a fox cut-out against the fabric, then added a rabbit on a second stick. At once the two silhouettes merged into a single dark blob, a jealous smear that swallowed the rabbit’s long ears. She tried to measure the gap between her hands by eye, drew one wrist back, and watched the fox sharpen while the rabbit dissolved again. A small pause, almost a hesitation in her grip, made the image flicker, and she heard two chopsticks tap together behind the sheet.

Orson, who had been sitting on a floor cushion on the audience side, pushed the sheet aside and joined her without a word. The adult had already cut two fresh cardboard handles; both had been coated with cellophane so the light would tint them amber, a simple piece of colour alchemy held together by the final tape strips. Orson took the rabbit stick, his palm dry and steady, and angled it away from the fox. The same ridge in the cloth fought them again, so Vera slid her free hand along the fabric and pulled it flat where the pin tugged loose. The second attempt mirrored the first, only now their elbows worked in a narrow rhythm, each adjusting a few centimetres until two separate figures stood crisp on the glowing screen. A cloud drifted across the sun without warning, erasing every shape in grey silence; when the light returned, both animals re-appeared, a fraction farther to the right but still apart. On the sill, faint heat from the glass lingered against Vera’s fingertips.
