Seeds and Balance-

English 원문
The pale stripe of chalk that usually marked the plank’s midpoint had vanished, leaving sun-dried wood that breathed out a faint resin smell. Harriet bent close, pressed her nose almost to the grain, and caught only the metallic tang rising from the greased fulcrum below. Rubber bumpers warmed by noon light released a smoky hint of burnt pepper, while a sweeter scent of distant lavender drifted from beds beyond the fence. She climbed the low end, sandals crunching over gritty sand, and the board dipped under her heavier frame. On the high end, Tatum gripped the hot handle, the odor of warm iron buzzing through her palms. They shuffled—Harriet sliding inward, Tatum edging outward—yet the plank still thudded against the bumper with every overshoot, puffing dusty air that tasted like dry oatmeal.
Harriet had placed her canvas backpack behind her for comfort, and inside, a small glass jar of seeds clicked softly with each tilt, spreading a nutty aroma whenever the lid tapped the glass. “They’ll grow together in the community garden,” she said, voice muffled by the wooden beam in front of her face. Just then a brass bell clanged from the nearby harvest festival, and a swirl of sugary cinnamon air swept across the playground. An adult on the shaded bench waved two chilled bottles toward them, lemon scent sharp and fresh. The girls jumped off; the seesaw knocked its bumper with a dull cough as they trotted over. While they drank, steam from a food stall coated their tongues with a sweet-corn taste, and a minute of chatter passed beneath the squeak of distant swings.
Returning, they met a stronger whiff of toasted kernels. The backpack, baked by direct sun, had loosened; the jar lay tilted, its lid ajar. Pale seeds rolled across the shaded half of the plank, leaving a gritty stripe that smelled earthy, almost like raw dough. Harriet set the backpack on her lap, adding weight higher up. Tatum slid another hand-width outward, her shoes brushing sand that tasted of salt in the air. The board quivered, then hovered level, grease scent vibrating through the metal curve. If more seeds spill, the surface will turn slick again, yet for now both ends balance in quiet creaks. At the far basketball court, a stray paper cup caught the same breeze and tumbled away, skittering over concrete until the sound thinned into the afternoon.
