Rain Across the Chalk Lines-

English 원문
Wet concrete released a sharp mineral tang beneath the chalkboard as Paul flexed his fingers and raised a stick of teal chalk. A striped cat crouched near a shallow puddle, tail twitching while his shoulders rolled for balance. Several bold rings had been outlined across the protected upper section, yet when he slid toward the lower half the damp surface rejected the pigment. The stick skidded, left a tantalizing pale smear, and cracked in two. Grumbling, Paul brushed fragments into his palm, then swept the felt eraser across the board, only to stir up a drifting cloud that drifted onto his sleeves.
Beyond the fence, a groundskeeper continued to prune carefully a row of young shrubs, each snip timed like a slow metronome. The sudden snap of a thicker branch startled the cat; it shot across the open pavement. Instinct pulled Paul after it, his shoes splashing through cold puddles while his shoulders pitched forward with each stride. The short chase formed an interlude, stealing his focus for less than a minute, yet thin rain arrived during those steps. Droplets mottled the unprotected lower board, turning chalk into watery ribbons before he reached the wall again. On returning beneath the awning, he found moisture streaks marking the space where he had planned broad roots.
He exhaled, feeling the weight of damp cloth on his forearms. The feline now perched on the supply box, paws tucked, blinking at the changed surface. Paul lifted a wooden ruler from the box—the tool’s length promised access to drier height. He aligned its straight edge against the trunk and drew anew; the chalk glided with mechanical precision, and the honesty of the line appeared under the steady shelter. If the drizzle stopped within minutes, the lower patch might dry enough for lighter textures, yet he no longer chased symmetry. Instead, he angled branches upward, letting rain distort everything below the shadow line. Fine green dust clung inside the ruler’s groove, and pale runnels stained the lower board where the shower had washed pigment downward.
