Cool vinyl gripped Jarvis's palm as he leaned over the form-filling table, steadying a pallet of syrup bottles against his hip. The queue number on his ticket showed eighty-nine, while display above the pharmacy window had been stuck on eighty-seven for a minute. He hoped to finish quickly, yet the label printer behind the glass scraped once and then abruptly stopped. The roll had been loaded backwards during the previous order, silently causing the stubborn misfeed. A technician tapped the housing; nothing moved, so she shoved the roll forward and waved Jarvis closer. He slid the pallet onto the slick counter and accepted the roll, its edge rough with curled stickers. His first try stayed gentle; he pressed the roll into the slot until backing paper brushed the grip wheels. For a breath the mechanism whirred, then the paper slipped sideways and slapped the glass, smearing adhesive across Jarvis’s fingers.
Sticky glue threads dragged across his trouser leg as he brushed his fingers down the coarse fabric. He lifted the roll higher and pressed its edge against the left guide rail to lock it square. That firmer shove tightened the strip, tipped a plastic flamingo pen off its stand, and sent clipboards gliding across polished linoleum. A low stool under the window stopped the slide; the top clipboard jerked upward, spraying loose forms into the air. Jarvis darted forward, palm flat on the smooth seat, swiftly trapping the papers before they drifted beyond reach. Green embroidery on his wristband scraped plastic while the technician eyed the now-straight label path. She flashed a grin; their kindred rhythm met the slow display just as the number shifted forward to eighty-nine. Five stickers slid out in sequence, and the empty core kept rattling inside the housing, tracing uneven circles against the plastic wall.
