Bright stickers of colorful kites covered the disc, their edges slightly raised and waxy under her sliding fingertip. She pressed the clip into the top's rim, but its kind-hearted curve refused a snug fit and pinched her fingertip. She crouched to eye level, running two knuckles along the scratched floor; the groove under her disc curved like a hidden valley. If she had forced more weight earlier, the rim would have bounced against that valley and stalled even sooner. Instead, she slipped the stubborn clip back into the tray, cooled her palm on the shadowed plastic, and adjusted her stance. A slower pull might ride the curve, so she rewound the cord gently, keeping tension even while stray fibres tickled her wrist. The disc left her hand at a lower angle, skirted the groove, and began tracing wide circles just beyond Zander's humming centre. Rustling leaves outside flickered through the open window, their soft swish matching the slower, steadier rhythm forming inside the bowl.

Zander stepped back, watching without a word as Willa's heavier spin grazed his disc, nudging it but never toppling the balance. The two tops now created twin rings: one tight and bright under sunlight, the other wider where cooler plastic stayed firm. A weight clip rattled loose on Willa's rim, slid outward, and landed against the arena wall with a muted metallic tap. Her top wobbled yet continued circling the hidden valley groove, scribbling fresh scratches across the already crowded pattern. The afternoon light crept further across the bowl, dulling the last shimmer on both silent discs. A faint ring of dust marked Willa’s wider path along the scratched plastic beside the cooled rim.
