English 원문
Three pale steam rings had faded from the stainless counter before Sara shifted her backpack closer to the packaging station. Golden light slid over stacked pastry boxes, and a soft yeasty haze drifted from the pass-through where strawberry tops waited for later composting. Hazel, the assistant, ran her thumb along a stubborn crease; the flat box refused to stay square. The queue behind Sara bunched, shoes squeaking on tile. Without a word, Sara pinched the warm cardboard edge and pressed it against the metal rim, letting the heat soften the fold. The shape finally held, although the delay allowed the display glass to fog again. A small pot of perennial violets, kept for color beside the register, sat between the folded boxes and a pair of shears used for pruning stray stems. Sara did not hesitate; she swung her backpack behind her shoulder, aiming to clear the fragile plant as Hazel slid the fresh apricot braid onto the paper tray.
The fabric brushed the pot anyway. Soil shifted, and a loose violet petal drifted downward like a slow drum. Lily the shop cat caught the flutter in the corner of her eye and sprang. The spool had been balanced beside the register, waiting for the next box; her paw struck it, and amber ribbon streamed across the warm floorboards. The moving strand startled a toddler, whose quick sidestep jostled a paper cup so caramel latte streaked the already fogged glass and hid the pastries completely. Hazel dropped the tongs and reached for towels, yet the ribbon kept spreading. Sara crouched, tore off a short length, and waggled it near Lily’s whiskers. The cat followed the waving loop away from the spool, back muscles rippling. Hazel slid a cardboard lid under the rim, halting the roll. She cleared the glass, revealing one apricot braid still on its tray. Hazel’s elbow guided the ribbon snarl toward a drawer while Sara’s boxed braid swayed against her palm on the way to the door.
