English 원문
Only two bright sheets of tissue paper lingered on the wrapping bench, their edges curling from repeated folding. The instructor, wiping dusty glaze numbers from small sample tiles, nodded as Zane carried the first bowl to the glaze reference shelf. Warm clay pressed against his palms, and the slight grain of the unglazed foot scratched gently under shifting weight. The dowel had been smoothed by years of handling, so its rounded surface pressed softly against his knuckles. At the shelf he set the bowl on the felt pad and tapped its rim with the wooden dowel. The note wavered, neither bright nor dull, caught halfway like a coin spinning on edge. He tried again, lifting the dowel for a sharper strike, yet the mixed sound returned, as if two bowls answered together. Sound served as mediation between eye and clay, yet the mediation now felt blurred.
Unity left the wash basin, water spotting her cuffs, and slid a quiet palm beneath the bowl’s base. With their hands no longer touching the felt, they tried a fresh tap, yet the doubtful note lingered. Breeze lifted straw in the reject bin; a wren slipped through the window and landed on mallet handle. Bird weight tipped the handle; the mallet bumped a nearby bowl, both pieces touched, and the ring vanished. Zane exhaled, slid a cork beneath one bowl, raising it a millimetre to innovate the test. Unity steadied the second piece; the new tap rang with a ping that outlived the kiln hum. Patience stretched across the table during the brief pause, marking the space between fading vibrations.
They carried the bowl to the reference shelf, shoulders braced to keep vibrations quiet, and repeated the raised-cork method on the batch. Clear notes began to stack in the air, one after another, like beads sliding along wire. The instructor moved closer, still sorting tiles, and glanced at the shifted cork with an eyebrow lifted but no comment. Outside, the wren fluttered away, leaving the mallet rocking in a slow arc before it came to rest on the felt. Zane rolled his shoulder and placed the wooden dowel beside the last bowl, its tip pointing toward the quiet kiln.
