Zane pressed his thumb against the cool metal while Flora, her braid pinned with a plastic daisy, peered at coral shapes beyond the glass. Five centimeters would bring the tiniest polyp into focus, yet the panel stayed fixed. It had been fixed here for years, and dried salt formed a chalky ridge beneath it. Zane shoved; the panel twitched half a centimeter, then stopped. The brief move sent an echo down the tunnel, yet most of the window remained blurred. Flora flexed her fingers and chose to dare to dream of a clear picture before the feeding bell rang.

A hand-wash station stood ten steps away, so they filled a paper cup and poured its warm stream along the rail. The trickle ran beside golden reflections, as if to sow the seeds of a narrow brown trail that softened another centimeter. Still short. Inside the tank, a model mangrove had laid down roots through the sand, copying the water’s path. They walked again; the second cup spread a honey glow and the panel edged two more centimeters. A third cup arrived just as a school group crowded the entrance. When the last drops met the softened ridge, gravity claimed the job. The panel slid the final gap with a slow sigh and swung outward, splashing against the bench.

Momentum carried the frame toward the glass wall; Zane wedged his forearm between pane and rail to brake the swing. The weight pushed steadily against his muscles, and water from the rail slid past his elbow, pattering onto the tiles. Flora leaned under the newly aligned lens, sketchbook already lifted, while the school group’s chatter rolled over them like distant surf. He kept his arm firm as the panel continued its slow descent, the wet ribbon still crawling down his sleeve toward the floor.
