The first patch of gravel beneath Harriet’s trainers gave way like damp cork, even though sunlight had been baking the maze for hours. She paused inside a junction crossing where four corridors met, the hedges towering just above her shoulders like a kelp forest frozen mid-sway. At her feet, a neat arrow had been arranged from small spherical pebbles. She tried to stride over it, but the loose stones rolled under her sole; her ankle twisted, forcing her to hop back. Eamon, two paces behind, steadied her sleeve before a stray twig could snag it. Harriet bent down, swept a handful of the pebbles aside, yet they simply gathered again against her toes, their round surfaces slipping over the gritty ground. Reaching the central clearing still remained her unwavering aim.

Fresh trouble waited above. Two ribbons hung on the hedge: once red and pink, now both bleached to a shared pastel, as a pungent boxwood scent drifted from a recently trimmed corner. The colours should have pointed the correct exit, yet the fading left no clue. “I’m disheartened,” Harriet admitted, her voice barely louder than the bees. She eyed the restless pebbles, remembered their slippery spin, and crouched again. One pebble, perfectly spherical, sat at the arrow’s tip; she placed it on the left fork, released it, and counted. If the pebble rolled far, it would prove the smoother route. It slowed after three heartbeats, caught by deeper gravel. She repeated the test on the right fork; this time the stone rolled longer, sliding until it bumped a lavender clump. Timing, not colour, would choose their route.

Eamon nodded and joined the small experiment, dropping a second pebble to confirm the pattern. The stones’ easy motion revealed a gentle inward slope, hinting that the right corridor curved toward the maze’s heart. They waited just long enough to watch both pebbles finish moving, then stepped onto the chosen path, keeping one stone ready in Harriet’s palm for the next decision. Behind them, the abandoned arrow lay broken, its head missing. One stone stayed lodged against a lavender stem, pressing the leaves flat.
