To strengthen the sign, she broke short lavender stems and laid them along the edges; purple met grey in a busy patchwork, and the direction began to blur. A gardener beyond a thin section of hedge hoisted a basket of wilted trimmings; the rope ran over a squeaking pulley, and its sudden shadow stretched across the stones like a fresh pointer, throwing the design into deeper jeopardy. If the breeze grew stronger, the loose stems could slide and mislead the next walkers entirely.

Lily sank to one knee, exhaled, and pinched the middle lavender row between two fingers. She lifted the stems away, then nudged the outer stones closer with a slow sweep of her boot, changing her angle until a single, tidy arrow faced south. The removed stems landed in the marigold ring, their scent mixing with the peppery flowers. She planted one last pebble at the arrowhead; the pouch collapsed flat on the gravel at the same instant the pebble touched the earth.
