English 원문
The tail of the diamond kite lay straight, but its nylon body flapped like a flag over the string-run corridor. Cool air carried crushed-grass freshness and a faint honey scent from gorse bushes, and each gust pushed a dusty, woolly smell from the hill’s short turf toward Viola’s nostrils. She steadied her stance, wanting the frame to ride higher. A witty row of cartoon lemons already dotted the cheerful fabric, yet she thought more weight might calm the sway. From her pocket she produced a narrow scrap of cotton that reeked of vinegar-soaked pickles and tied it to the tail. The line spoke out a high, tinny whistle; the reel pivoted in her palm, and the kite climbed a metre.
The breeze thickened again, bringing a metallic tang as if distant lightning had scorched iron filings. The cotton strip alone did not quiet the rolling, so Viola knotted on a second ribbon torn from an old rag that smelled of smoky fireplace soot; its threads brushed her chin before sailing upward. A third effort followed: she fixed a heavier oil-stained bandage whose pungent note reminded her of bicycle grease. With every addition, the kite dipped lower until a cross-gust flipped it sideways. Tension vanished, the reel twisted against an over-wound loop, and slack string draped over a thistle. If she had left the tail plain, the frame would have stayed lighter, yet the thought arrived too late.
She crouched, pinched the jammed spool, and with one sharp tug removed the middle, smoky ribbon. Weight eased; the remaining strips fluttered, and the nylon sheet caught a cleaner current. The kite rose again, its line now free of the thistle, while the discarded rag rested on the grass releasing slow curls of bitter ash smell. Blake’s snack bag rustled behind, mixing peanut sweetness with the vegetable sharpness of the wind. The kite that had hung uncertain moments before now traced wide arcs, and its shortened tail flicked through the blue air toward the far slope.
