Mud, Water, and the Bulb That Floated-

English 원문
Clyde scooped a palm-sized lump of cool mud from the dry crust of the bank. He pressed it over a narrow split where a shiny thread of water slipped away into the next paddy. Warm, compost-rich air drifted up, mixing the sweet green smell of the seedlings with the earthy reek of soaked clay. A deep frog croak rolled under the egret’s thinner call, the resonance vibrating through the warm surface water like a muted drum. Beside the crack, an up-turned light bulb floated on a reed stem; the glass belly bobbed just above the proper mark, proving the paddy still leaked. His first patch dulled the trickle but did not stop it, and muddy drops continued to patter into the neighbor’s pool.
Clyde scraped a second handful, this time digging deeper where the mud stayed wetter and carried a sour mineral bite. The two textures refused to cling, so he pinched them together, letting wetter and drier layers stir together until the mix felt even. He packed the heavier wad into the gap, yet thin water lines still glimmered along the edges. A faint memory of yesterday’s science lecture about communicating vessels rose uninvited, describing why every drop mattered; the thought sharpened his practical quandary rather than solving it. Across the grid, Cora balanced along the far bank with a tray of spare seedlings. Noticing his struggle, she knelt and flaked three small sheets of surface clay free, each smelling dusty and sun-baked. She slid them across the path like flat cookies. Clyde stacked her slabs over his softer paste; their combined weight sagged, then sealed. For one long breath the crack swallowed no water, and the light bulb’s base kissed the surface, perfectly level.
The silence broke when seepage from the adjacent field nudged the bulb higher, warning of a new imbalance yet to be tackled. Clyde grinned at the unplanned puzzle, then brushed his fingers clean on the grass. As he stood, a tiny spiral shell, pearly and unbroken, clung to the cuff of his pant leg, catching the sun in a quiet wink.
