English 원문
Pearl planted her heels on the sun-dried bank and pulled the wooden sluice plank upward. The plank had been swollen by three days of steady rain, and it rose only a finger’s width before jamming. Moisture shone along its edge like brushed oil, and warm water hissed through the narrow gap into the paddy. The thin stream ruffled a cluster of tadpoles; their sudden darting sent a frog leaping, the splash startling a copper-winged dragonfly that zipped low across Pearl’s wrist. The insect’s slipstream rocked a pond snail, the tiny hermit releasing its grip and drifting against a seedling stem. Pearl steadied her balance, but the movement shook her straw hat; its threadbare ribbon skated over her cheek, tickling like dry grass. With both thumbs wedged under the plank she tried again, yet the grain refused to slide.
She bent her knees, slipped her palms farther apart, and rocked the plank from side to side before lifting again. The sideways motion loosened the swollen fibres, and the board crept upward another half span. A thicker sheet of amber water roared through, folding the nearest seedling row. Pearl’s eyes widened; if the plank slipped now, the current would bend every fragile blade in the shallow end. In quick response she pushed one elbow against the gate frame, using her weight to hold the plank steady while sliding a short bamboo peg into the groove as a brace. The rush steadied to a gentler run, and the earlier surprise ripple flattened into calm rings. Behind her, June shifted a tray of seedlings; the movement disturbed another frog, but the pegged plank blocked any larger surge. Sunlight glowed on the water, turning each floating rice leaf into a tiny panel of gold. At the far paddy, Cora pressed fresh mud over a leaking seam, and water kept trickling through her fingers toward the deeper pool.
