Rhythm Above the Cages-

English 원문
Grooved rubber cooled Jasper’s fingertips as he gripped the edge of the display cage. Above his head, a tiny warbler flicked its wings and piped a bright, uneven trill that threaded through the soft drone of the aquarium pumps. An adult at the supply shelf compared food bags, polishing each wrapper so the aisle kept its easy cleanliness. Jasper tipped his chin upward; the cage roof still blocked the striped throat of the singing bird, and the step-stool had been borrowed by another customer. He slid a compressed pack of paper bedding from a lower rack, set it flat on the floor, and climbed up. The seven added centimeters raised his ears closer to the notes, yet the perch hovered a handspan higher.
Dawn balanced beside him and fetched a second bedding pack. Its plastic cover gave a gentle crumple when it landed, adding another neat lift. The tower’s groundwork felt steady; the rubber mat beneath stopped any slide. A rinsed bucket, left upside-down to dry, sat near the counter. It had been placed there by a staff member, so its rim was clean and smooth. Jasper tipped it over, heard a dull ring, and set it as the core of the stack. If the bucket slipped, the whole pile would topple. With three layers now combined, their shoes reached new height. In that instant the warbler’s tune shifted—short metallic taps replaced the flowing notes, matching a faint vibration running along the cage bars.
The pattern drew a fresh picture: the bird was beating time against metal, turning the steady hum of pumps into its own timeline of clicks and pauses. Jasper, now eye-level with the perch, counted each beak tap—one, two, three—before a longer whistle spilled out. He hoped to remember the sequence later and chose not to add any more weight. He hopped down, letting Dawn watch next. Jasper tapped the cage frame once, and a single clear ring lingered in the aisle.
