Six bright pears still clung to the upper branch; only minutes earlier ten had shimmered against the leathery leaves. Cal pressed a palm to the bark, its surface coarse with lichen that rasped like sandpaper. A three-rung ladder lay nearby; its side rails felt dry but the rungs carried the day’s warmth. Beyond the last row, Grandfather sat on a low bench, folding a soft cotton handkerchief between weathered fingers. Cal’s goal stayed clear: reach those remaining pears before the other pickers finished their rows and before birds turned the fruit into their own banquet.

The ladder had been placed on a patch of springy moss, and the moment Cal climbed, the feet sank unevenly. The sway forced him to grip the top rung; splinters caught his skin and pulled him backward. A squirrel darted along a neighboring yew, shaking loose a shower of tiny needles that brushed his shoulders and made him exclaim. Strategy shifted. Cal stepped down, dragged the ladder two long paces toward firmer soil, then waited while the branch stilled. Timing mattered more than height. On the next climb the branch stopped bobbing, allowing one quick twist of the wrist to bring the nearest pear within reach. Its skin yielded gently under his thumb; he eased it free and lowered it into the basket, securing the canvas liner with a brass clasp so the fruit would not slide.

Weight built fast. By the sixth pear the wicker pressed hard against Cal’s hip, and the top layer rolled perilously. The almost-full basket promised bruises if another pear dropped onto it at the wrong moment. He had noticed that the shaded fruit felt firmer, so he decided to reorder his tasks: walk the heavy load to the sorting table first, then return while lighter. The stroll cost precious minutes. When he reached the ladder again, the branch that had been crowded now held three pears, their stems bending slightly in the cooling light.
