English 원문
A loaf of bread sat alone on the flat stepping-off stone. Who was going to carry it across the shaking planks?
Lars flexed his ankles, trying to take in the bridge’s slow rise and fall before stepping forward. That morning, he and Frida had paused under a beech tree to gather ingredients for simple sandwiches—bread, a block of cheese, and a squat jar of berry jam. The bread had been tied inside a cotton cloth, so he tucked it under one arm and pressed both palms against the rough handrails. Four paces in, the ropes pulled downward; the loaf slid, but a quick shuffle of his boots kept it balanced. A final lean carried him onto the far bank, and the cloth dropped beside Frida’s waiting shoes: one third of their picnic cargo now safe.
He contemplated the increasing sway on his return journey, then set the cheese across his forearms like a small log. Moisture from the morning dew still glossed each plank, and the block’s weight forced his knees lower with every step. Mid-span, the plank with the hidden slack dipped an extra finger-width, tugging the bridge sideways. Lars paused, let the ropes rebound, and edged forward. Another ten measured strides planted the cheese beside the bread. Two items down; one remained. Frida, left alone on the far stone, tried to entertain herself by tracing circles in the dust with a twig while she waited.
The final trip carried the glass jar. Its smooth sides offered no grip, and the extra mass deepened each oscillation. When Lars reached the sagging centre, the worn plank dropped suddenly, tilting the jar toward the gap. At that instant Frida braced both hands on the far handrail and pulled; her tug sent a counter-wave that lifted Lars’s side just enough. He hugged the jar to his chest, pushed through the last three planks, and set it beside the other food. Sunlit hemp fibres clung to his fingertips while Frida began to slice bread on the stone. At the same hour, a squirrel near the approach path pawed through muddy boot prints, flicking pebbles into the shallow stream.
