Three bright rectangles marched across the carpet, each one bouncing from a mirror propped against another thick paperback. Dust motes floated inside every beam, dancing like thin wires in the glare before sinking into pooled darkness. Near the window, Rosa turned a page of her novel, her elbow holding the gap steady without comment. Forrest knelt in the adjustment zone, sliding a cool plastic-backed mirror onto a warm box wrapped in tape. The new angle carried the reflected spot across the chair back, then lost it against a shaded shelf. He nudged the mirror; the spot hopped upward, brushed the ceiling, and vanished again when a passing cloud dimmed the source. That shifting brightness left a faint after-image across his eyes, so he blinked and waited for the beam to return.

When the sun re-emerged, he aimed to steer the revived beam onto the white card taped to the far wall. A slight wobble in the first-bounce table threw the light a hand-span wide of the target the moment he breathed. He tried wedging a slim wooden ruler under the book, yet friction with the carpet let the support slide away. The spot blurred, then grazed a lower shelf where a palm-sized plastic dolphin stood among pencils and coins. If he had kept tilting the third mirror toward the card, the little dolphin would have remained a dull silhouette in shadow. He paused, then pivoted the mirror’s foot two centimetres outward, sending the bright spot squarely onto the dolphin’s curved back. That glossy toy, once an ordinary curiosity on the shelf, now shimmered with tiny ripples each time the cloud cover thinned. To sustain the angle, Forrest slid a rubber wedge beneath the mirror, the incline acting as a gentle lever against gravity. A trace amount of dust lifted from the frame, swirling through the glare before settling in silent spirals around his wrist. He was leaning forward, thumb under the wooden lever that held the mirror half a breath from tipping.
