English 원문
“Binoculars first, then feeding area,” Emil said. He tapped the sun-warmed brass rail beside the map kiosk, dust streaking across his fingertips. Gravel rasped under his shoes as he followed the visitor pathway toward the giraffe feeding zone, the rope queue still slack between metal posts. A steel overpass for service carts arched overhead, its shaded underside cool against the crown of his head when he stepped beneath it. Patches of fresh, springy turf showed clear signs of regeneration after winter; keepers had fostered the new growth with thin mats that flexed under Emil’s soles. Confident that space remained on the platform, he traced a cast giraffe footprint set in concrete and jingled a coin meant for feed pellets.
The rope suddenly tightened. Staff unclipped one segment to funnel waiting visitors forward, and the line shifted in a quick pulse. A school group flowed from a side trail and occupied every marked square before Emil reached the gate. The latch clicked shut, and the keeper called the platform full until evening. Emil, who had planned to stand eye-level with a giraffe, inhaled the hay-tinged air, turned, and climbed the observation overpass instead. At the top, a pair of metal binoculars waited, their barrels cold and slightly greasy against his brow. Through the lenses, the curved lower edge of the enclosure glass magnified a lone giraffe wandering out early; sandy patches on its hide appeared almost close enough to touch, and the slow sway of its neck filled the view. Hooves drummed on the dry ground below while Emil loosened his grip on the smooth focus wheel.
