English 원문
The fourth slot in the neat row of staplers on the supply shelf held only silence; the metal bodies on either side made a tidy rhythm of silver, gap, silver, silver. Idris ran a fingertip along the shelf edge, the carpet under his shoes giving a faint static crackle while a distant phone rang twice and stopped. The office cat, Oscar, blinked from the sunny windowsill and tapped his tail against the glass, sending a soft thump that matched the steady hum of the corridor printer. A mug painted with dark hemlock branches rattled on the meeting-room table each time a draft squeezed through the doorframe, as if small sounds were signing an unspoken truce across the floor.
Projector fan noise built into a low roar when Idris uncapped a green marker; its nib scraped the whiteboard and produced barely any ink, so he grabbed a blue one. The blue squealed and left a thin line; he added black, which hissed across the plastic surface, and finally red, whose drag sounded like sand on glass. Colours piled over each other until the agenda letters looked muddled, and each new swipe caused a sharper squeak that drew a gale of laughter from colleagues passing the open doorway. A surge of warm air escaped the projector vent, fluttering an aspen-leaf magnet that Idris had pressed over the corner of the page—now the magnet slid, and the paper drooped like a tired flag.
The growing racket made Oscar flick his ears, and that tiny movement nudged Idris toward the mess he had made. He lifted the cloth and, with one brisk pull, wiped the fat red stripe away; the board answered with a gentler, shorter squeak, and the remaining lines suddenly read clearly. Where the red layer had been, a slim metal shape glimmered in the tray’s shadow—the missing stapler, wedged behind the markers all along. Carpet fibres caught the light as Idris was reaching behind the tray for the hidden stapler.
