English 원문
Two intersecting grooves marked a silver-grey chip lying on the shrinking rim of the largest puddle. “Is that writing or only scratches?” Zara asked, kneeling beside the evaporation edge while her boots pressed shallow prints into the mud. The chip mirrored a slice of pale sky until a drop from the overhanging branch shattered the image with quick rings. Zara leaned closer; cool stone met one knee, yielding earth met the other. Paul, walking the path ahead, hummed with the gutter’s low gurgle but did not turn. No maker’s mark showed, yet the crisp lines and smooth corners hinted at quiet craftsmanship. A faint film of silt blurred the surface like frost on glass.
She pinched the chip and pulled, but wet clay gripped its underside and refused to release it. Nothing she tried could persuade the clingy layer, and each tug sent cloudy streaks rolling across the puddle. Zara waited for the water to still so she could interpret the grooves again. A single drip landed square on the metal, washing away grime and revealing a square frame around a tiny painted scholar. The fragment had been shaped so thin that light traced its edge. Startled, she rocked back onto a dry island of stone; the piece was clearly part of an ornament, perhaps once wrapped as a present.
Curiosity returned almost at once, and she slid two fingers beneath the loosened chip, guiding it into clearer water. The shallow flow lifted the fragment, and the painted figure brightened while clay slipped away in silvery threads. Rather than pocket the find, Zara positioned a flat pebble underneath so air could reach both faces. She had hoped to learn its story, yet no date or emblem appeared. She stepped away, quietly leaving the badge balanced on its new perch. Zara turned toward Paul and brushed a ribbon of mud from her glove while fresh rings drifted outward across the water.
