English 원문
"Yellow is nearly empty," Vance said.
Vance dragged a wooden craft stick through the glossy red well. His grip slid on the cool handle, and the stick dived into the yellow pool. Orange bloomed, the initiation of a chain that sent red flecks across the newspaper. One speck struck the cat’s whiskers; the cat jumped, tail knocking the half-filled rinse cup. Water sloshed forward but met the bulky paper-towel roll, which wedged the cup in place. Theo’s earlier utterance rang through the tiles while a gathering of tiny orange beads crept toward the tray edge.
Vance tore a strip of paper towel and dabbed the orange dots before they reached the table’s edge. The cat lowered its head, licking the bright streak from its whiskers with obvious relish. He carried the rinse cup to the sink; lukewarm water was being poured out in a cloudy rush. Fresh water filled the jar, cool enough that condensation gathered along the smooth glass. If the water grows murky again, every new shade will drift toward brown. Returning, he straightened the overhead lamp so its warm beam spread evenly across the tray and the remote drying rack. Along the shaded end, earlier swatches had dried lighter, revealing how the kitchen light altered every estimate. The cat circled once, then curled beside a cupboard, claws withdrawing as the floor’s cool tiles eased under its belly.
A gentle tap from the cup made Vance glance sideways just as he set down the test strip. The craft stick, lifted by the clearer water, had drifted up and now nestled against the glass rim. The cat, curious again, nudged the cup with its cheek, rolling the stick across the newspaper. Vance pinched the damp wood near the varnished tip, steadied his wrist, and guided it toward the blue well. One measured swirl drew green forward, and a neat ring of colour stayed inside the chosen mixing cell. The yellow paint that had been pure glided in a swirling ribbon beneath his moving stick.
