Most leaves drifted aimlessly before the low weir, but every third leaf shot straight toward the narrow channel. Oscar, in rubber boots, leaned on the warm sluice board and watched the leaves repeat their neat escape. Their tidy row crossed open water like small beads on a steady string of current. Farther down, the paddles clapped briskly, yet the wobble stick barely shivered despite the quickened spray. He had already brushed stubborn leaf fragments from the rake’s blunt tines earlier that clear morning. Yet the wheel’s wooden structure still turned too gently for the weight of water pushing past his shins. Kneeling, he ran his fingertips over the smooth, cold stone that cradled the swollen board. The vanished leaves hinted at something spinning quietly below the clear and chilly surface there.
He shoved the swollen board with both palms; wood rasped against stone as water lunged to the wheel. Spray cooled his sleeves, and the clumsy indicator stick wobbled harder with each sharper splash. At the garden bend, Floyd’s measuring rod now showed only ankle-deep trickle, while soil stayed pale. The extra push that pleased the wheel starved the beds of steady moisture for seedlings. Oscar stepped upstream and watched leaves whirl midway, circling before slipping beneath a line of bubbles. He stepped into the stream, boots gripping the gritty bed, and his heel sank into a valley between stones. Cold water spun around his ankle; few children dare to linger in such chill, yet the rubber kept numbness away. If he blocked that hollow, both wheel and garden could share the flow more evenly.
A clay flower pot sat beside the border stones, its rim chipped and inner wall still damp. He lifted it; the coarse outside scraped his palms while leftover soil crumbled onto his sleeve. Upside-down, the pot felt heavy, and he carried it mid-channel, lowering it until current pressed over the curve. Water split cleanly around the clay and hurried onward, no longer wasting strength in the hidden spiral. He nudged the sluice board upward two finger-widths; irrigation deepened, and the wheel kept its rhythm. Floyd tapped the rod against stone before returning to his notes. Fine scratches, creamy against the darker rock, ringed the spot where clay met stone today. Oscar traced one pale scratch with his thumb while the cooled water slipped past the steady pot.
