English 원문
The packets near the stone floor stayed cool and firm, but those stacked beneath the hot tin roof sagged with hidden moisture. Willa stood at the window ledge—her chosen sorting spot—while Ira rinsed clay pots outside. A dusty sweetness drifted from hanging marigold heads, and sharper rosemary oil pricked her nose each time the bunches swayed. Two unmarked envelopes waited in her palm; both held tiny round seeds that glimmered with a faint, earthy film. She rubbed one seed between finger and thumb, hoping the released oil would speak. Instead, basil, thyme, and lavender mingled in the warm air like an unexpected artistic collaboration, turning every breath into a mixed bouquet.
She had already lifted the magnifying glass, yet even under the round lens the seeds showed no clear difference. A faint crunch from the floor revealed one cracked under her shoe, releasing a peppery cloud that quickly sank into the stale warmth. When she carried the trays toward the herb-drying hook for reference, a robin—perpetual scavenger of loose crumbs—hopped through the doorway and scattered the lighter seeds with two rapid pecks. The bird’s sudden visit reminded her that these envelopes had travelled through a quiet cultural exchange between distant gardens; no wonder their scents overlapped. Kneeling, she gathered the spilled grains, shifting her weight so her nose aligned with the cooler current slipping across the threshold. Short, shallow sniffs alternated with deep lungfuls of fresher air, giving each aroma a cleaner stage.
Back at the ledge she changed strategy: instead of steady inhalation, she took quick tastes of air, pausing after every whiff. The first envelope finally offered a warm, clove-like trace that stayed on her tongue; the second carried a drier, grassy bite. She slid the probable basil into the left wooden tray and let the oregano drop into the right, the two piles now separate enough to stay safe if another feathered visitor arrived. She leaned forward, holding the last pale seed between finger and thumb.
