English 원문
A crushed oval of silver-green grass marked the place where marker stone three should have stood, yet only the imprint remained. Griffon knelt, brushing pale stems aside while Elsa steadied the orienteering map that had been clipped to a board earlier; its blue grid showed uneven justification along the right margin, a quirk of the old copier. They needed two things at once: a fresh compass bearing to locate stone four, and the tracing overlay that recorded their route. Griffon lifted the compass; a hairline fracture crossed the clear lid, but the needle still swung. He noted north, then turned toward the eastern tree edge, unaware that the buried iron pipe lay beneath his boots.
Ten paces later the needle contradicted itself by almost thirty degrees. "I yearn for a straight answer from that needle," Elsa muttered, squinting through shadow. Their first reading—element A—was clearly false. To protect A, Griffon climbed the northern hillock, lifting the compass into full blue light until the red tip settled into a steady line. Success arrived, yet the moment he wrote the corrected bearing, the damp moss under his knee soaked the lower corner of the tracing sheet. Ink bled into feathery streaks: element B had worsened. He paused, weighing options; the overlay carried every waypoint so far, but the bearing was useless without a record. An earlier assumption that moss meant north now seemed almost comic.
Griffon tore the soaked corner away, leaving most of the sheet readable, and folded the remaining piece inside the map. Elsa gathered two flat pebbles to weight the paper edges, then they retraced their steps to the empty grass oval. The missing stone lay half-hidden under a nearby fern; together they dragged it back, aligning its painted number toward the new bearing. The imprint that had been empty now held the marker again, though damp soil clung around its base and the stone leaned two finger-breadths off vertical. Grey numbers on the stone glinted, tilted slightly toward the stream.
