The speaker crackled overhead, but the orange digits above the footbridge blinked in silence; Nolan needed the newest departure time, yet a pigeon bobbed beside his shoes expecting the seeds in his paper cup. A cross-wind pushed through the glass panels, carrying a faint diesel smell and ringing each metal step with a thin reverberation. His parent hovered near the information board, comparing lines, while Nolan opened his silver-grey notebook. He had already copied the earlier time when the digits rolled again. The demanding schedule now showed a different platform, so he pressed the notebook against the handrail and tried to jot the change. The shove from his elbow kept the pages still, but the cup hanging from his forearm tilted; kernels slid out, pattering across the gritty tiles.

The pigeon flapped toward the spill, and the motion pulled Nolan’s focus away from the screen just as a fresh announcement bounced around the arching summit of the bridge: the train had been shifted to the far track. Seeds now scattered, notebook smeared, Nolan paused, then changed his order of moves. First he crouched, used one corner of the notebook to guide a rough pile of remaining kernels back into the dented cup, and only then he waited for the next pause in the display. When the digits froze for half a minute, he steadied the cup against his knee, balanced the notebook on top of it, and wrote the new platform number in slower strokes. Neither the note nor the cup looked perfect—ink streaked beside the figure, and fewer kernels stayed inside—but both could still serve their purposes. As he rose, strip lighting glanced off the tiles where a thin trail of seeds lay wedged against the toe of his shoe, shining under the blue-white glow.
