English 원문
A sharp, mineral tang rose from the damp clay bank as Luna crouched beside the ankle-deep creek. Her boots pressed small hollows into the soggy ground while a green frog perched on a nearby pebble, throat pulsing. Leander, a few steps away, traced wildflower shapes in his sketchbook and let the afternoon drift. Between two fixed boulders, water rushed through a gap as wide as Luna’s arm; blocking it became her afternoon experiment. She had already nudged three palm-sized stones into the throat of the gap. Each landed with a thud, slowed the flow for a breath, then slid as the current pressed harder through the narrowing space. The upstream pool rose only a finger’s width. Luna rubbed gritty sand from her hands and scanned the bank. She spotted a flat shale slab that looked heavy enough to add the missing weight.
She lugged the shale from the outcrop; its edges felt sharp yet flaky like stacked cards. As she leaned forward, the wide-brimmed hat on her head shifted. The hat, a family heirloom fashioned from textured fabric and quilted years earlier, had been stitched by her grandmother, a patient quilter. A loose ribbon trailed from its brim, brushed the bright water, and twisted straight into the gap. The slab dropped against it, but the ribbon’s soft weave kept one corner from bedding down, so a silver jet hissed through. The frog splashed away. Luna steadied herself, pinched the ribbon free, and set the hat on a dry stone. Returning to the bank, she scooped three cool handfuls of sticky clay. Kneeling upstream, she pressed one wad after another around the stubborn corner. With the third press the tiny jet stopped. The surface behind the new wall lifted, and overflow began to curl quietly around the far edge. If late sunlight stayed on the hat, the damp marks would soon evaporate. Cool water beaded on her knuckles, refusing to warm even as shadows stretched across the creek.
