Together they steadied the humming duet; two lines now ran clean and tight. Drake crouched, pencils scraping quick strokes of each loop, while Corbin tugged extra line through his fingers. A fresh roar swept over the crest; the weakened knot on Corbin’s string whitened, thinned, then parted with a dry ping. The freed kite rushed east in noisy pursuit of a racing cloud, wings flicking through sudden aerobatics until distance swallowed its colour. Corbin rolled the slack onto the reel; Drake planted the peg so it would stay put, then tapped the grass in silent apology.
