English 원문
A plastic reel already hummed on the flat stone, its pale handle ticking under Drake’s steady palm when Corbin reached the windward crest. Fabric overhead cracked like popcorn; Drake’s diamond kite executed sloppy aerobatics each time a micro-shift rippled through the far-reaching gusts. Drake had already pinned the only ground peg — a bright blue stake beside the stone — so he could park his reel while sketching the kite’s path between puffs of wind. Corbin, gripping his own line, wanted the peg to pause and retie a knot near the middle of his string. The two boys exchanged quick nods; voices drowned beneath the hiss riding the grass. Their separate goals now circled the same small anchor.
The humming deepened as a cross-gust yanked both lines; the peg vibrated, rattling against the stone. Drake braced the reel, but the kite dived, the string wrapping once around itself with a dry scrape. Corbin’s line whipped low and snagged a thistle on the slope, the snag twanging like a banjo string. If either released tension, the other line would slacken and spiral. Corbin ducked downhill, footsteps crunchy on stalks, while Drake kept the peg pressed flat. At the thistle, Corbin snapped a thin twig from the tussock and used it as a lever, prying the line over the barbed crown. The twig served as his sudden tool. Meanwhile, Drake lifted the peg for a heartbeat, performed a quick handspring of his wrist, and unwound the self-made twist before planting the peg again.
Together they steadied the humming duet; two lines now ran clean and tight. Drake crouched, pencils scraping quick strokes of each loop, while Corbin tugged extra line through his fingers. A fresh roar swept over the crest; the weakened knot on Corbin’s string whitened, thinned, then parted with a dry ping. The freed kite rushed east in noisy pursuit of a racing cloud, wings flicking through sudden aerobatics until distance swallowed its colour. Corbin rolled the slack onto the reel; Drake planted the peg so it would stay put, then tapped the grass in silent apology. Hours later, after both boys had trotted down toward the village, the peg lay tilted beside a shallow print of two knees, and a loose ribbon of line flickered against the stone between sporadic breaths of wind.
