Glare Hidden Under Four Laminated Roofs-

English 원문
Only three laminated coral-identification cards remained in the metal rack, their damp edges curling away from the slick backplate. Lars pressed two fingers against the smooth plastic and felt a thin film of moisture slide under his nail as he lifted one. A bright cone of warm light from the ceiling glared across the coral window, washing out the orange ridges he wanted to explore through the swivel magnifier. His goal was clear: block the glare so he could count the tiny polyps. He balanced the first card against the magnifier’s rim, then wedged a second beside it, the surfaces sticking together like a loose hinge. The pair formed only a narrow roof, and bright streaks still spilled across the glass. Bea, sketching fish shapes on a rough notebook page nearby, glanced sideways but kept her pencil moving.
A fresh wave of visitors shuffled in; shoes squeaked on the wet tile before the crowd’s slow retreat toward the jellyfish corridor. Two children slid their cards back into the rack. Lars waited, timing his reach for the new supply once their elbows no longer brushed his shoulder. The additional pair felt cold and rigid between his fingertips. He let each settle along the first layer, building a tiny pillow fort of overlapping plastic, yet light leaked through a gap near the hinge. Overhead, a ventilation draft lifted a hanging banner; the fabric snapped downward and knocked one loose card onto the floor, an unexpected interruption that pushed his plan off balance. He stooped, recovered the card, and noticed another visitor returning two more. After the corridor emptied again, he collected those last pieces, slid them into position, and in that instant the glare vanished. The coral surface came into sharp relief, every groove clear under the softened glow.
Lars leaned closer, tracing the rough pattern with his gaze while Bea handed him a graphite-smudged scrap so he could copy the layout beside her sketches. A schedule announcement crackled from the speaker, and visitors drifted toward the feeding area, following a tradition older than either child. The rack that had held only three slick cards was now completely full again.
