Zara pressed her boot on the first rung, and the rope ladder swayed like a slow pendulum beside the trunk. She had planned a simple task: drape a fresh rope over the junction of three limbs, then knot tightly for support. The line needed three loops to grip the ridged bark; fewer would slide during the next gust. Atlas, on the grass below, had been coiling spare rope and humming with the mower noise across the fence. As Zara reached the branch junction, morning dew shimmered silver lightly across the nearby planks. She had to embrace tightly the rough trunk to keep balance while the ladder quivered above her boots. Between gusts, she could witness moments when bright sunlight blinked briefly through the swinging leaves overhead. Her first throw landed, yet the single loop hung loose, offering only a partial hold.

She gathered the coil again, shifted her stance, and launched a wider arc across the limb. The second loop slid beside the first, gripping extra bark, yet the free end dangled thirty centimetres below the chalk mark. One shorter plank had been lifted earlier, dangling from the bucket, and its edge tapped the trunk with each sway. A pause in the wind passed, then a fresh burst rattled leaves and blew sap scent against her cheek. A grey squirrel sprang onto the hanging rope, claws pricking fibre, its small weight stretching the line a finger’s width. That extra tension shortened the dangle, and Zara used the sudden slack near her hands to flick the rope over once more. The third loop dropped cleanly into place; bark ridges squeezed against fibre, and the whole bundle stopped sliding altogether. She pulled hard to knot tightly, and the fibres arranged themselves like strands attending a quiet ceremony on the branch. If the rope loosened later, the three loops would still share the weight and keep the platform secure.

The line held as wind shoved through, and Zara let her shoulders drop while she checked plank edges near the junction. Atlas gave a casual thumbs-up from below, still busy with his own rope coil beside the toolbox. The squirrel scampered to the knot, sniffed it twice, and vanished along the extended branch toward pale daylight. Above, a magpie launched from a shaded twig and glided toward the neighbouring maple, a slender sprig clamped in its beak.

她重新收繩、換了站位，再把繩子畫出更大的弧線。第二圈貼住第一圈，抓到更多樹皮，但繩尾仍比粉筆記號短三十公分。稍早吊桶已經吊上一塊較短的木板，擺盪時木邊敲著樹幹。風停一拍，又有新陣風帶著樹脂氣味撲向她的臉。一隻灰松鼠跳到垂繩上，爪子刺進纖維，小小的重量把繩子拉長一指寬。這額外張力縮短了垂尾，札拉趁手邊鬆弛再次拋繩。第三圈乾脆落位，樹皮擠住纖維，整束繩子完全不再滑動。她用力拉緊打結，纖維像參加安靜儀式般排列在枝上。若繩子之後稍微鬆動，三圈仍可分擔重量，確保平台穩固。

風又推過來時繩子依然牢靠，札拉鬆下肩膀，檢查交會處周圍的木板邊。亞特拉斯在下方舉起輕鬆的比讚手勢，仍忙著自己那卷繩子和工具箱。松鼠跑到繩結前聞了兩下，接著沿著外伸的樹枝消失在淡色日光裡。樹冠上方，一隻鵲鳥從陰影枝條起飛，銜著細枝飛向隔壁槭樹。
