Five earlier launches had skated across the sun-lit half of the bowl before Dawn’s fingers yanked the cord again. The thinning braid needed to twist and turn inside the notched spindle, yet each fibre resisted and slowed the wind. Earlier spins had disappointed her stopwatch’s tiny dolphin sticker by drifting outside the centre ring. Hoping to overcome that drag, she clipped an extra weight onto the disc; the metal sat with a tenacious grip against the hub. Sun glare poured across the concave plastic, highlighting circular scratches that had been etched by dozens of collisions. When Dawn finally released, the top slid from the launcher station into bright space, but its hum came softer than planned and its path arced toward the cooler shadow. The slow disc brushed the warm rim, nudged a loose weight clip that Xander had placed there while adjusting his own gear, and the tiny cylinder began to roll.
Gravity pulled the clip down the curved wall; with each half-turn the sunlit side gleamed while the underside stayed dim. The rolling metal struck Xander’s spinning top square on its flank, redirecting the bright disc toward the parts bench. That impact rattled the container of spare tips; two tips hopped free, clinked against the felt tray, and one tipped the tray’s corner upward. Three more clips spilled out, sliding in separate arcs like marbles. Xander’s knee jerked forward; his palm flattened over the felt, stopping the first spill and breaking the chain before anything reached the tiled recovery zone. The arena still vibrated, yet the cascade had shortened with each link, sound fading from clang to muted scrape. Fresh rings now lined the place where Dawn’s disc had scraped the rim. A single metal tip kept circling the bowl’s shadow edge, drawing a thin, new groove along the dim plastic.
