English 원문
The spoon chime hung motionless in a narrow shaft of light, but the tin-can lid drifted through shadow. Quinn stood beneath the low branch, holding a short length of translucent fishing line and a shell cut into a loose spiral. Every metal edge threw quick gleams across the rough bark, bright points that danced over the collie's fur as it lay in the pooled darkness beside the blanket. On Quinn’s wrist, a square fitness tracker blinked a faint green dot each time his pulse steadied. He wanted the new shell to enter the mix without drowning the gentle thock produced when two wooden beads mingled nearby. A paperback lay open beside Paul, the adult, who turned pages while scissors glinted nearby. Quinn waited until the breeze paused, then he looped the line twice and tied a neat knot.
When the next gust arrived, the shell swung forward and struck the spoon at precisely the wrong moment. The spoon rang out in a bright hum, but its new timing masked the hollow beat of the beads entirely. Quinn leaned back to the listening position where glare from the open grass outlined each swinging arc. He saw the problem at once: the wooden pair had been tilted by the shifted weight, their strings crossing and choking each swing. The cluster reminded him of a sewing trick his aunt had called a happy gathering, cloth bunched tightly along one thread. He unclipped the shell, counted three silent heartbeats by watching the tracker flash, and waited until the spoon swung away. Only then did he re-hang the shell half a finger higher, using the breath of time between beats as space.
Another breeze slipped through the leaves, lighter than the first yet strong enough to shift every pendant into a new rhythm. The spoon rang, paused, and allowed the beads to knock once before the shell added a soft tap; none of the tones dominated, and their chiming mingled like rain on two roofs. Quinn moved to the quiet-comparison spot behind the trunk, and only the shell’s solitary tap reached the dim space, confirming the compromise he had chosen. He rolled back across the warm grass, guiding the collie deeper into the pooled shadow beside him. The tin-can lid that had drifted alone at the start now swung closer to the spiral shell, its moving shine tracing short arcs along the bark.
