English 원문
Wet limestone carried from the fountain mixed with the green edge of the hedge as Ulric took the cool seat on the shady bench arc, his sketchbook already balanced across his knees. Twelve strokes from the distant clock tower proclaimed the new hour while his older sister Kira crouched nearby, her camera strap brushing the warm slab at her feet. Ulric wanted clean line work on the left page and fresh color washes on the right, yet the damp breeze kept rearranging those plans. Spray drifted over, turning to tiny beads that clung to the rough paper; his fingers began to stiffen in the chill each time he flipped a leaf. A pigeon, seemingly mesmerized by shifting rainbow patches on the lower rim, hopped closer and scattered more droplets across the open spread.
He slid forward, choosing the stone rim itself despite the slippery surface, and wedged a narrow piece of cardboard—saved from yesterday’s cereal box—between the fountain side and his drawing hand. The improvised shield worked; the inked outlines hardened without smearing, their edges clean against the pale pulp. Gravity, however, led the gathered moisture along the cardboard edge, and a thin ribbon dripped onto the right page where light blue pools waited for later shading, turning them into soft stains. Ulric raised the board higher, tilting it enough to spare half of the color page while still covering most lines; perfection vanished, but both pages survived. Just then the pump eased, water falling in quieter sheets, and the once-blurred coins lay still beneath a glassy surface. He leaned, catching the coin shapes quickly with rapid strokes before the flow surged again.
A fresh jolt from the restarting pump rocked the rim, nudged the pigeon into flight, and pushed a wider spray against his cardboard. Ulric kept pressing the damp shield between paper and water, his pencil poised above the trembling outline of the largest coin.
