English 원문
Dina swung the stairwell door wide and stepped onto the deck, where wet wood smell mingled with metallic tang from the vane. A hound trailed behind, pausing to sniff a sour puddle caught between planks that carried earthy rainwater and chalky grit. Above them the anemometer cups hissed, and a stirring gust snapped the weather vane eastward with a click that released greasy fumes. Fraser, her father, leaned on the railing; warm coffee breath carried a sweet roasted note past the dog's nose. The compass rose had been painted years earlier, and its north point smelled faintly of sun-baked varnish. Dina had heard the vane’s reputation; it rarely matched the slow clouds unless a steady wind held. Dina noted the vane pointing east, yet the flag hung limp; she tapped the warped tail fin seeking a clear reading. If the gust settled, Dina could confirm whether the vane stayed or drifted.
The tap loosened a bead of stale grease that rolled toward the deck edge. Another gust lifted the droplet, scattering oily specks onto Fraser’s cup and releasing a pungent, smoky whiff. Fraser wrinkled his nose and stepped back, bumping Dina’s tote bag. The bag tipped, and a fresh pencil slid across the plank groove until it stopped beside the open stairwell door. A downward draught slipped through the doorway, carrying dusty stairwell air, vinegar-sharp with ink, and flipping logbook pages below.
Dina hurried downstairs, the hound trotting after, noses twitching at the musty rush that now overpowered the warmer desk scent. Dust spun above the desk, giving the room a chalky flavour that clung to Dina’s tongue. She nudged the door until it clicked, and the musty wind thinned at once. She flattened the fluttering sheets, but her recording pencil cracked as its point met the paper; only the fallen spare remained. Fraser’s footfalls on the steps added a dull thud, yet Dina noticed the fading warmth of graphite against the paper. Scooping it up, she wrote the east reading, emptying the pencil’s final millimetre of graphite just as another squeak echoed above. The blunt stub rolled off the desk and circled toward the stairwell, while the anemometer kept spinning in the draught.
