English 원문
The centre plank flexed beneath Ivan’s boot, its splintered fibres scraping the rubber tread as he steadied himself beside the weather vane. He raised a mirror, lining the vane’s arrow with the north stud that glinted between soft shifting cloud shadows. He planned to walk the exact reading straight downstairs and write it neatly before the wind could twist again. Beside him, Stella sketched cloud layers for her own report, the nature-centre volunteer watching both children without comment. Under his hand, the compass rose had been painted bright red years earlier, yet weather had dulled and chipped it. A sudden lull left the vane drifting; the corner flag snapped late and pointed south-east. Ivan whispered the mixed bearing twice, then stepped onto the stairwell, wood panels groaning under his trainers. Halfway down, a gust funnelled through the opening, slamming the door and drowning his words in a single metal thud.
At the dim recording desk, he found the logbook open, its pages shivering in the draught that followed him. A flattened orchid, pressed during weeks of gestation, lay across today’s column to preserve the place. Before he could steady the sheet, it flipped, nudging the protractor against the pencil cup. The plastic edge bumped the cup, and a plethora of pencils rolled like short sparklers toward the stairwell lip. One slender pencil dropped through the gap and pinged on a post below; the volunteer muttered, "Wind's playing tricks." Ivan pressed his palm on the logbook and drew the ruler across the fluttering edge. Then he pushed the stairwell door until the latch clicked. The rattle faded, leaving only the anemometer’s steady hum, a quiet reminder of the busy biodiversity below the canopy. That hum rose and fell through the railing slats, turning in place like unseen gears beyond the platform.
