English 원문
Water glimmered across the front four stepping-stones, while the back four still showed a dull, dry grey. Kane paused on the bank, afternoon light flickering through pine trunks and throwing thin shadows over the brook. Griffon, a tawny spaniel with an easy disposition, stood beside him and sniffed at the breeze; a zesty scent of crushed needles drifted between stripes of brightness and pooled darkness. The marker post on the far bank caught full glare, but its small arrow remained unreadable from here. Kane’s goal was clear: reach the post before the sun slipped lower. A sodden clump of moss clogged the boardwalk’s drain slot and sent a narrow stream darting over the stones. He had tried three times to lift it; each tug only widened the gap, and the water sheet thickened until light bounced off every stone like broken glass. If the wad had been light, it would have flown free at once.
A sudden remembrance of the clean map hanging back at the shelter made Kane glance at his veering compass; the needle quivered under a haloed reflection and offered no help. Griffon splashed one paw onto a half-wet stone, stirring mud that swept downstream and clouded the shallow glow around the stepping-line. The brook, wind, and swinging symbol plate formed a small cascade: water leapt from stone to stone, struck the post’s base, and set the metal plate wobbling so quickly that the arrow blurred. Kane steadied himself, mindful of the slipperiness, and lifted the moss again. Heavy with water, it wouldn’t fly—yet its weight pressed water from its own fibres. He began to compress the lump between both palms; dark drops escaped, then the sponge-like mass shrank. The same absorbency that had flooded the path now drew moisture back toward itself.
Kane pressed the dripping moss against each stone in order. The last scrap soaked the final puddle and left nothing to spare. He set that damp piece on top of the swinging plate; its cling stopped the spin at once, and the arrow settled toward the birch stand path. One last drop slid from the moss edge and fell into the brook below.
