A spray of brook water arced from Harris's boot as he hopped onto the first stepping stone. His bright socks flashed between splashes, and the small pack on his back swung left and right. Theo halted beside the boardwalk, Zara a step behind him, shoulders rising and falling after the uphill pace. Daylight began to rise and shine through gaps in the pines, but under the bridge the current pressed cold against stone. The marker post on the far bank had been tilted by spring floods, and its arrow lay half hidden under mottled lichen. Theo faced a neat quandary; reaching the post required crossing before he could even read it. He set a quintet of toes on the first rock and pushed, yet a thin film of water shifted under his boot. His ankle wobbled, balance tipped, and he hopped back to the plank, wet drops peppering his knees.

In his second attempt Theo crouched lower, letting his knees absorb the pull of gravity. He pressed his sole onto the rock and shifted weight gradually, then made a controlled leap to the next, narrower slab. The landing sprayed a fan of droplets downstream; the splash rattled an ensemble of orange pebbles below the surface. Those pebbles rolled, guiding a slip of water beneath the boardwalk where a loose plank hovered above the flow. The sudden push lifted the plank’s far end, and a ribbon of water climbed across its top, nudging Harris’s forgotten compass toward the edge. The needle had been affected by the slope and wavered as it slid. Zara lunged and pinned the compass with her palm, halting the tiny cascade. If the stream rises higher, the plank will dip again, so Theo hurried. He scraped the lichen free, the arrow pointed left, and he hopped back; the first stepping stone that had been firm now rocks in the brightening current.
