English 원문
A shallow dent near Vernon's knee showed only smooth sand where his yellow shovel usually rested. He planted both hands, leaned forward, and raked his fingers through the loosened grains, searching every corner of the dent. Shovel or not, he still aimed to tunnel between two plastic buckets before the slide queue drifted his way. A metallic dessert spoon, forgotten beside a snack wrapper, became his substitute; its narrow bowl cut a quick trench. Yet each fresh wall collapsed, sliding as if pulled by the net-rope sway behind him. Vernon pressed the spoon harder, shoulders rounding, but the spilling continued, filling the gap faster than he could dig. He paused, wrists tingling from the repeated strain, and lifted one bucket to examine the grainy pile from a different angle.
Lifting the bucket exposed a darker stripe two fingers below the surface; moisture weighted that hidden layer like clay. He pressed the spoon into the stripe and felt steadier resistance climb through his forearm. If he had kept patting only the dry top layer, the wall would have crumbled again within seconds. Copying a calm technician, Vernon switched order: dig damp sand first, pause, then slide the bucket away. The mechanic behind the settling matched his earlier intuition when the fresh arch held its curve under his wrist. For proof, he built a tiny gizmo from two sticks and a bottle cap and rolled it through the tunnel. The improvised wheel reached daylight without a shiver from the walls.
As he admired the steady arch, a sudden spray drifted over the fence; the park sprinkler had switched on early. Cold droplets peppered the roof of his tunnel, darkening patches but leaving the packed middle untouched. Janet, sitting on the shaded bench, lifted her head and called, “Rain from a hose!” He balanced on his heels, nodded once, and set both tools in line beside the nearest bucket. A soft, steady hiss from the turning sprinkler lingered beyond the fence for several breaths after the water stopped.
