When the edges looked even and the inner fibre had been polished to a pale sheen, Frida gripped the dowel, counted three, and spun. The copter leapt, buzzing through air that carried a caramel trace, yet halfway up it veered right and landed in a clover patch with a doughy thud. Hedy sighted along the blade and spotted a hidden arch in the grain. She stroked the string once more, then rolled the shaft across her palm; every turn left an iron-soil tang on her skin where bamboo dust met sweat. If the ribbon stayed steady, the next launch would show the final balance. Their next launches rose straighter, though each one still curved gently across the park. They laid the paired copters on the bench edge and stepped back. Above them, the ribbon tied to the branch kept twitching, flicking sweet-sap breezes over the silent clearing.
