English 원문
Plop— a fresh drop struck the broad puddle and sent bright rings gliding toward a shadowed edge of the path. Beside the wavering circles, Hector noticed a twisting scratch in the mud margin, its line almost hidden under reflected branches. The mark offered pure novelty among the usual boot prints; he crouched and traced it, the groove tangible like a fine thread carved in clay. Light broke through thinning clouds, so the water turned mirror-clear while the mud beside it stayed dim. A blackbird, feathers haloed by glare, pecked near the drip zone and tilted its head at the movement. Behind Hector, a grandparent sat on a bench, silent except for an occasional cough that softened against the steady gutter gurgle. A smooth stick rested on a warm stone island, waiting.
Another drop landed, its glare-fracturing splash blurred the scratch’s edges under fresh ripples, so Hector lifted the stick and nudged a low twig overhead. The twig shook, releasing a quick shower; freed of hanging drops, the branch now cast a steady silhouette, and the puddle stayed still. Yet the fallen droplets hammered the mud margin; soft earth shifted and water ran outward, pushing a thin film over the scratch. By guarding the glowing mirror he had drowned the delicate line; the blackbird fluttered back as mud waves reached its toes. Mud had been pushed aside by his boot, and dark water seeped into the new gap while light glimmered across the surface.
He knelt, pressed the stick flat across the puddle mouth, and drew a slow channel toward the evaporation edge. The shallow trench guided surplus water away, granting freedom to the faint groove yet dimming the puddle’s mirror. As the mud settled, twin ridges appeared inside the line; the supposed scratch revealed itself as a dried track where a beetle had dragged its shell, not a scrape from stone. Sunlight widened, and warmth stole sections of brightness from the water. What remained showed a muted silhouette, while the track lay clear against darkened clay. A distant shout from the playground rolled between trees, mingling with the blackbird’s quick chirr. Hector laid the stick on the warm stone island and stepped back.
