English 원문
A pale circle of drier stone lay on the mineral diagnosis bench, the metal pan that had formed it nowhere in sight. Beside the circle, a crescent of wet grit curved like a fresh footprint toward the creek. Fintan bent low to check whether the mark pointed back to his own station. His sibling Bethan knelt at the bench, recording grain counts in a small notebook. A sparrow hopped along the wooden foundation of a nearby sign and released a series of gleeful chirps that echoed under the canvas roof. Sunlight slid across the amber water; every pebble threw back honey-colored sparks, and imagination painted secret tunnels inside the tiny stones. One bright speck clung to the pan's inner ridge as Fintan carried it from the swirling station.
The magnet had been placed near the white streak plate earlier by another group, and its pull still reached across the bench. Fintan set the pan down, lifted wet tweezers, and tried to catch the glittering speck. The steel tips jerked sideways and clicked against the magnet; the speck slipped and vanished among black grains. Bethan looked up from the notebook and murmured, “Try again when the pan is still.” A gust fluttered the pages, and loose magnetite scattered across the scratching surface, burying the flake even deeper. Fintan brushed at the dark sand, yet each pinch ran straight back under the magnet’s invisible tug. If the magnet had been lighter, it would have drifted with the push, but its solid weight pinned it to the wood. Measuring the gap with a short ruler changed nothing; every motion ended in the same metallic tug.
His fingers paused, noticing how the darkest grains hurried toward the magnet while lighter sand stayed behind. That stubborn attraction, the very feature that kept stealing the tweezers, could sweep the plate clean instead. He slid the magnet under the tilted ceramic, and a narrow river of black sand fell away until only the speck remained. One quick drag scratched a bright yellow line across the plate, clear as fresh paint. Bethan noted the result in her chart, then eased a glass vial closer with steady tweezers. Downstream, a duck sent up a delighted splash, amber droplets looping lazily through the warm sunlight. Fintan slowly nudged the soft flake from the plate and into the waiting vial of clear creek water.
