A slate-feathered sparrow hopped onto the sandbox edge, scattering pale grains that glittered against the rubber mat’s blue shadow. Silver afternoon light slid across the metal slide, painting the climbing frame with thin bands of steel-grey brightness. The wooden border beneath Zev’s palms felt cool, yet the loose sand above it warmed his fingertips through the thinning shade. An overnight deluge had soaked the hidden drainage pipe under one corner, although the surface still looked as dry as powder. The sparrow pecked twice at that corner, lifted a darker lump, then fluttered toward the low fence beyond the swings. Its dotted claw prints left a slender lineage across the pale sand, each newer track nested neatly inside the earlier one. Zev brushed the loosened layer, and a grey puff drifted toward the swing set before disappearing into the cooler air.

He wanted to discover why the deeper layer held together, so he carried his bucket across the blue-grey mat toward the fountain. The stiff push-button had been polished by countless hands, leaving a dull silver shine on its top. It allowed water only while his knuckles pressed, and each pause silenced the narrow stream before the bucket filled. By the time he returned, half the load had splashed away, soaking the mat yet leaving the sandbox surface stubbornly unchanged. If the sand stayed dry, the walls would collapse like cards, so Zev switched tactics instead of repeating the slow water trip. Bram, shaking a plastic sieve near the rope net, glanced up to inquire about the delay, and Zev replied with a nod. He drove the shovel into the shaded corner the sparrow had chosen, where inches down the grains turned slate and clung together. Wet sand hugged the metal blade, heavy as an anvil, yet it packed into a neat block when he tipped it out. Tiny droplets began to condense along the bucket’s cool rim where the sudden shade met the sunlit slide platform. The sparrow fluttered closer, and Zev was lowering the damp block toward the bird’s waiting feet.

他想弄清較深那層為何能黏在一起，便端著水桶跨過藍灰墊走向飲水台。那顆硬實按鈕被無數手掌磨得發鈍，帶著暗銀色光澤。只有指節壓住時水才流出，每一次移手都會讓細柱驟停，桶只能斷續裝水。等他回到沙坑，半桶水已經濺失，少量水分很快滲下，表面仍無變化。若沙子保持乾燥，牆面就會像紙牌般坍塌，因此澤夫改變做法，不再往返取水。正在繩網旁用篩子的布拉姆抬頭想詢問進度，澤夫只用點頭回應。他把鏟子插向麻雀剛啄過的陰影角落，往下幾吋處，沙粒變成板岩色並緊緊黏合。濕沙緊貼金屬鏟面，重量像鐵砧，但倒出時卻能成為方正沙塊。忽陰忽晴的交界處，水桶冷緣上開始凝出細小水珠。麻雀又飛回來，而澤夫正把那塊濕沙慢慢放向牠等待的雙足。
