English 원문
Dry mineral scent of sun-baked sand rose the moment Zeke knelt beside the sandbox. Afternoon glare poured across the pit, throwing his short shadow over a plastic dump truck and a watermelon-pink funnel. He planned to load the truck quickly before the swing became free. The narrow mouth of the funnel, however, was jammed by a damp, sticky clot of sand; only a fraction of each scoop slipped through. Zeke had tapped the funnel’s side twice, yet the clog held firm and damp grains clung together like slow syrup. An ant—the smallest inhabitant of the pit—paused near his wrist, antennae flicking. With clear reluctance, Zeke tried to poke the lump out using a twig from the border, but the wood bent and snapped. Sunlight kept beating down, turning the truck’s metal axle into a thin line of reflected glare.
A shout from the swing set carried across the rubber surface, but the seat remained occupied, so Zeke stayed. During a brief interlude when a cloud dulled the brightness, he spotted fine sand leaking through a hair-line crack along the truck bed; the flaw had been widened by earlier rough play. Without the missing blue shovel—borrowed by Willa on the far side—he could not patch or refill quickly. Another scoop would only escape again. He lifted the stubborn clot from the funnel, and sticky grit glued to his palm. The same glue-like heft that had slowed him now offered an answer. He pressed the lump against the crack, smoothing the edge with a thumb until no light showed through. Dry sand cascaded from his free hand, piled against the makeshift plug, and at last stayed where it landed.
Glare returned as the cloud slid away, and grains shimmered inside the truck’s bed, held in place by the coarse seal. Zeke nudged the loaded truck toward the slide area, wheels leaving twin lines across the bright surface. At the same hour, beside the water fountain near the fence, Noemi pressed the stiff metal button; a thin jet arced once, then cut off when her tired fingers slipped.
