English 원문
An early gust had blown willow strands across the pond before Esme reached the stone ledge beside the lily pad cluster. She carefully balanced a paper cup of pellets in her left palm. The damp rim pressed a cold ring that left her thumb almost numb. The water lay flat as a dark windowpane. When she flipped a loose handful forward, the breeze returned, made the cup lurch, and turned the sprinkle into a wild swirl. Most pellets bounced off the broad leaves and rolled away; fish mouths gathered below in vain. Above them, a shallow relief of waves spread, then faded.
She stepped back from the railing, shaking tingling fingers as she steadied her stance. She crossed the gravel path toward the pellet dispenser post where Finn searched pockets for spare change. Finn gave a short laugh and muttered, "Empty pockets again," while patting every jacket seam. The plume from the fountain zone sprinkled a fine mist that dotted her sleeves and cooled the skin along both forearms. She passed Finn a coin, then bent to tighten a loose lace; the crouch stretched her calves and steadied her breathing. A squirrel scurried over the railing, vanished behind a shrub, and scattered white petals that drifted like shredded paper. While she waited, she traced a fingertip along the stone, feeling the raised outline of an old carved carp in shallow relief. The fountain’s steady hiss mixed with the rattle of metal inside the dispenser wheel. Sunlight flashed brightly on each ripple spreading near the shaded corner of the pool.
As Esme rose slowly, a fresh gust rolled across the broad water. An abandoned paper cup spun along the ledge, struck her ankle, and halted. She quietly recognized the softened rim and damp crescent: her earlier cup. Without pausing, she cradled it with her fingertips resting higher to avoid the tear. She then tipped only three small pellets gently toward the shaded corner. The smaller angle sent the grains in a low arc that landed clear of the lily pads. A broad amber koi slid from the darkness, mouthed each pellet, and slipped away, leaving the surface still. Across the pond, the fountain plume caught the wind and sprayed a wider veil. A visiting duck paddled sideways through the silver droplets, neck bobbing with each push.
